Why are women becoming more body conscious?
Is this the only century that is mesmerised by the Kim Kardashian butt? Well yes, because there's only one of her, and this is the century she has come into exisence. Unless she's a shape shifter. There is, for many women a desire to be...fabulous and SEXY, because symmetry and co-ordination is ascetically pleasing, its not everything however but its certainty accounts for something.
Women are more worried about their body shapes due to the simple fact that they're showing more of it and fashion is the number cause of such worry and anxiety.
In my culture, back in the day women use to wear layers and layers of fabric to make their butts appear bigger. Bigger butts and thicker thighs were considered beautiful but at the same time it was attainable by anyone. The accepted reality was that not many women were naturally built this way but they were able to add a little something to achieve the look. Consider the concept of makeup to understand this. But it was not only common in African culture but in Western cultures too. Corsets were highly fashionable in the 1800s and 1900s.
So the desire to achieve the perfect shape or at least the perception of perfection has not changed, so what has? Examine the above picture and compare it to todays high street fashion. Long sleeves with long skirts are a thing of the past, as you see in the picture above. You either have to show cleavage or some leg. Not both however, although I think that thats also something of the past. What if you're flat chested with kankles? I'm being serious!
You know what happens? You get self-conscious because you can't wear what everyone else is wearing. And here we have hit gold! You even hear a lot of people saying "no you have to have boobs for that dress"..."no you have to have a butt for those jeans". Why? It's easy for me to say to you girls, wear what you want and be proud and fabulous but its not that easy. And I also don't want to take any responsibility for what you choose to leave your house in.
Why do you have to have...boobs for a dress or a butt for a pair of jeans?
Because the outline of your body is clear to see? Women back in the day did not wear bodycons and skinny jeans but in your world everyone but you has a perfect body. But what if you want to escape this? What if you want to take ownership of what you put on your body? It's a difficult thing to understand and for a non-hijabi and difficult decision to make.
The barrier between a woman and the person looking at the woman is slowly fading away. Recently an experiment was held were a woman was walking around a shopping centre in body paint and underwear and nobody batted an eyelid! Ah what a move forward society! Cheers to your endless ways of making me pity the lives of my future kids and grandchildren. *sips non-alcoholic mocktail*
Islam has always had simple solutions to everyday issues but we find it difficult to explain the reasons why we Muslim women, dress the way we do without resulting to the much loved lollipop analogy. Damn that lollipop analogy.
It's because we don't want to be part of this game really. You can't make me feel bad about my body...because you have never seen it.
